If you are feeling a little nervous about your first aesthetics appointment, you are in very good company. Most people are, and a good consultation is designed to put that nervousness at ease, not add to it. A consultation is simply a conversation. It is your chance to ask anything, and my chance to understand what matters to you before anything else happens.
Here is what a thoughtful first consultation actually looks like, step by step.
The first part is all about you. What is bothering you, what you would like to feel more confident about, and what you are hoping for. There are no silly questions and no wrong answers. Sometimes people arrive thinking they want one thing and leave realising something quite different would suit them better. That only happens because we take the time to talk it through first.
Next comes your medical history. This is not a formality, it is a safety step. I will ask about your general health, any medicines or supplements you take, allergies, previous treatments and anything relevant in your history. Some conditions and medicines affect whether a treatment is suitable or sensible right now, and this is how we find out. Please always answer honestly, because it is genuinely in your interest.
With your permission, I will look closely at your skin and facial structure. Faces are not symmetrical and they change over time, which is completely normal. This assessment helps me understand what is realistic and what will genuinely suit you, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Then we talk options. I will explain what could help, what each option involves, the likely benefits, the risks and side effects, the expected longevity and the cost, in plain language. Importantly, I will also tell you if I think you do not need a treatment, or if now is not the right time. Honesty is the whole point. If a treatment is a prescription-only medicine, a face-to-face assessment with a prescriber is part of this process, exactly as professional guidance requires.
You will never be asked to make a decision on the spot. Many people prefer to go away, think it over and come back, and that is always welcome. A cooling-off period is a sign of a responsible clinic, not a missed sale. If you do decide to proceed, you will give informed consent, which simply means you understand and agree to what is planned, including the risks.
If you go ahead with a treatment, you will leave with clear written aftercare and a way to contact me if you have any questions or concerns afterwards. Knowing you are supported after your appointment, not just during it, is part of feeling safe.
A consultation should leave you feeling informed, respected and unhurried, whether or not you choose to book a treatment. That is the standard to expect, every time.
